Douglas L. Hallett

Douglas L. Hallett was most recently general counsel of Mercury General Corporation and its subsidiaries, including thirteen property and casualty insurance companies operating in every state.  His duties included litigation in which he acted as lead trial and appellate counsel, regulatory and legislative issues, and providing ongoing legal advice to the companies’ accounting, investment, underwriting, claims, human resources, and marketing departments.  Before that he co-owned and served as a senior officer, including president, of a full-service automobile insurance managing general agency operating in both California and Arizona.  For the eighteen years prior to 1993, he was in private practice, including tenures as a partner of Los Angeles-based Adams, Duque & Hazeltine and New York-based Coudert Brothers.

While in private practice, Doug has represented many of the nation’s largest life & health and property & casualty insurers, including Travelers, Aetna, CIGNA, Metropolitan, Prudential, and Pacific Life.  He has personally handled virtually every type of insurance case including personal injury, coverage, bad faith, brokers and agents, Unfair Competition Law class actions, ERISA claims, and insolvency issues.  He also has an extensive background in regulatory and legislative affairs as well as a wide variety of general commercial law experience.

Doug graduated with honors from Yale University and earned his law degree at Harvard.  He is a former president of The Conference of Insurance Counsel (Los Angeles), has been a licensed California insurance broker-agent, and has spoken and written widely on insurance issues.

Virgil L. Roth


Doug shares offices with, and is of counsel to, Roth & DiMonte.  Virgil and Doug practiced law together more than twenty-five years ago at Adams, Duque & Hazeltine.   Virgil Roth opened his own firm, now Roth & DiMonte, in 1996 after managing the business and commercial litigation departments of three of California’s largest firms, Graham & James, Pettit & Martin, and Bronson, Bronson & McKinnon. He has directed complex and class action litigation in a wide variety of areas, including products liability, insurance, environmental and toxic torts, intellectual property and real estate.

Virgil has represented Siemens Energy & Automation, McDonnell Douglas, Masco Industries, Hercules Incorporated, Grubb & Ellis, Fleet Bank, Stouffer Hotel & Resorts, AIG, Allianz Insurance, Nationwide Insurance, Essex Insurance, Wausau Insurance Companies, Hinkly & Schmitt, Sentinel Cremation Society and Emerald Oil Company. He has also represented the National Football League as well as the rock group Van Halen.

Virgil graduated with honors from the University of Notre Dame School of Law, where he served as an editor of the Notre Dame Lawyer.

Anthony A. DiMonte

Tony began his legal career in his hometown of Chicago, Illinois, practicing in the largest integrated court system in the world, The Circuit Court of Cook County, Illinois, and the Federal Bankruptcy Court for the 7th Circuit. He has concentrated on commercial litigation, but also has a wide range of business transactional experience. Outside of his current legal practice, Tony has worked for large Midwest-based commercial banking institutions, handling Real Property and Estate Planning matters. He is licensed to practice law in both California and Illinois. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and his law degree from Chicago-Kent College of Law at the Illinois Institute of Technology.

Charles D. Ferrari

A graduate of University of California (Davis) School of Law, Charles has been practicing since 1987.   He began his legal career in Los Angeles with the national firm of Lewis, D’Amato, Brisbois & Bisgaard, specializing in complex commercial and environmental/toxic tort litigation, eventually expanding his litigation practice to include construction defect, administrative law, products liability, employment, professional liability, civil rights and real estate matters.  He has served as in-house counsel and director of warranty for SMC Corporation, and as a Senior Assistant Attorney General for the State of Oregon.  He has represented the State of Oregon, Rossmoor Corporation, Mission Linen Supply, Inc., Watt Industries and Newmont Mining Corporation.

Ronald D. Tym

Ron started his career as a corporate attorney for Foley & Lardner, where he eventually became a partner.  Foley & Lardner is one of the 25 largest law firms in the country.  Finding his  entrepreneurial spirit constricted by the thousand-plus other lawyers at the firm, Ron then started his own law firm in New Mexico. He now serves simultaneously as Of Counsel to Roth & DiMonte.  Ron is licensed in California, New Mexico, Missouri and Wisconsin and has worked on transactions in over 30 states.

Ron has closed billions of dollars of public and private securities offerings, as well as billions of dollars of real estate financings and complex commercial loan financings.  He also has been lead attorney on many domestic and international mergers and acquisition transactions (including reverse mergers).  He has served as counsel to domestic and international unregistered and registered investment funds and is intimately familiar with the ’33 Act, ’34 Act, ’40 Act, Investment Advisors Act, and Trust Indenture Act.  He also has closed billions of dollars of tax exempt bond financings and even single handedly beat the IRS when it challenged one of his innovative tax exempt bond structures.

Ron earned  his law degree from Stanford, where he received the Hilbert Oehlman award for excellence in legal research and writing.
